Is there a connection between coronavirus and 5G?
No, there is no connection between coronavirus and 5G technology.
Rumours linking 5G to COVID-19 have been making the rounds on social media for several months, associating the deployment of 5G in China with the emergence of COVID-19. Originators of this conspiracy theory provide no rational proof that would justify their allegations. We would like to remind you that the waves used for 5G are the same type as those used for 2G, 3G and 4G and those for TV and radio.
There is no scientific evidence that would explain why a biological illness would be facilitated by exposure to radiofrequencies that have been around for decades.
The outbreak of COVID-19 and the installation of 5G in China is obviously coincidental and viral diseases have emerged and developed for thousands of years. The most recent are SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2013 in China, MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus) in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and Ebola (haemorrhagic fever) in West Africa in 2013, which all affected different populations and developed well-before the arrival of 5G. It should also be noted that the spread of this epidemic has absolutely nothing to do with the development of existing 5G networks and has largely spread around the world via the development of international transportation, even in countries where 5G has not been deployed.
It is of course understandable that when a new technology is rolled out, despite the use of waves that are known and whose health effects have been studied, there are worries in the population. However, this concern is totally unfounded, all international organisations have recently confirmed that 5G is harmless.

- The World Health Organisation (WHO)
In a Q&A on 27 February 2020 on 5G mobile networks and health, the organisation provided this reminder:“To date, and after much research performed, no adverse health effect has been causally linked with exposure to wireless technologies. Health-related conclusions are drawn from studies performed across the entire radio spectrum but, so far, only a few studies have been carried out at the frequencies to be used by 5G. […] Provided that the overall exposure remains below international guidelines, no consequences for public health are anticipated.”
In its “Myth busters” section, WHO refuted any link between COVID-19 and 5G:
“5G mobile networks DO NOT spread COVID-19:viruses cannot travel on radio waves/mobile networks. COVID-19 is spreading in many countries that do not have 5G mobile networks.”

ICNIRP, the International Commission on Non‐Ionizing Radiation Protection, in its press release published in March 2020 on its new exposure guidelines.

The European Commission has created a platform called “Fighting disinformation” and directly addresses the question:
“The EU has the highest consumer standards in the world. It is the reason that we can walk into a shop and feel confident in the products we buy. 5G is held to these incredibly high standards. In fact, our standards are far above those indicated by international scientific evidence – because in the EU, people come first. There is no connection between 5G and COVID-19. The Coronavirus is a virus that is spread from one person to another through droplets that people sneeze, cough or exhale. 5G is the new generation of mobile network technology that is transmitted over non-ionising radio waves. There is no evidence that 5G is harmful to people’s health. The outbreak of coronavirus in the Chinese city of Wuhan is unrelated to 5G, and is thought to have originated in a seafood wholesale market.”
The Science Media Centre
The Science Media Centre in Great Britain cites experts saying that the theories connecting 5G to COVID-19 demonstrate a “complete lack of understanding of the difference between cause and coincidence”.Prof Malcolm Sperrin, Director of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, said:
“…The supposed correlation between 5G and its development in China reveals a complete lack of understanding of the difference between cause and coincidence. In the simplest terms there might have been a train leaving Wuhan station during 5G development, but the train departure was not caused by 5G.”Dr Simon Clarke, Associate Professor in Cellular Microbiology, University of Reading, said:
“The idea that COVID19 is caused by 5G mobile phone signals is complete rubbish. This is a disease which numerous doctors and scientists around the world have said is caused by a virus, something completely different to a mobile phone signal… 5G radio signals are electromagnetic waves, very similar to those already used by mobile phones. Electromagnetic waves are one thing, viruses are another, and you can’t get a virus off a phone mast.”Prof Adam Finn, Professor of Paediatrics, University of Bristol, said:
“The present epidemic is caused by a virus that is passed from one infected person to another. We know this is true. We even have the virus growing in our lab, obtained from a person with the illness. Viruses and electromagnetic waves that make mobile phones and internet connections work are different things. As different as chalk and cheese. The internet connections these networks give us are one of the most important tools we are using to coordinate our response to the epidemic and efforts to do research to overcome it. Damaging phone masts is like knocking holes in your lifeboats while your ship sinks.”
